DGDD Year 1 folks,

I'm impressed with the quality of work some of you submitted - you've taken time to explore the concepts and ideas in greater detail, achieving depth in reason and imagination. I'm glad some of you took the time and effort to experiment with layout and presentation - that makes reading and discovering your work fun - kinda like seeing what makes you tick.

That said, a number of you did not manage to submit your final journals - for a variety of 'valid reasons' - let's see:

You were still at the printing machine at 12pm?
You'd errands to run so could not make it to the office in time?
You'd a valid LOA (but showed up in person to seek Director's signature??)
You were caught in a jam?

Guys, if you recall, you enjoyed a week's extension on the deadline. Besides, submission times starts at 8am and ends at 12pm - you could have made submission a priority inspite of your schedules. I extended a 15-min grace period yet you must remember it is not your privilege nor your prerogative to request/demand for [late] submission. Despite many reminders about the severity of late work (penalty: non-submission, with the exception of an LOA), you wilfully chose to disregard dept regulations.

I sincerely hope that you'd clear the module - assuming your standard of work submitted & attendance for the module is up to standard. Nonetheless, let this be the last of such mistakes in your life - academic, work or otherwise.

My apologies to those who've been submitting good work consistently. - this latter part is not directed at you. I congratulate you on your good grades for HTI.

This is an update of last Friday's deadline for journal submissions.

There are some folks (1 from 01, 3 from 02) who, disappointingly, failed to submit their assignments given that:

i) I made it really easy for you to understand course content (imagine if you'd to make sense of the lecture notes by yourself),

ii) I'd repeated, reiterated, summarized each week's content with easily accessible examples so that you could follow even if you did not pen your thoughts down right after each lecture,

iii) your classmates put in time and effort to present their findings and research during seminars - mind you, each pair had to plough through some quite-tough readings so that you (if you choose not to) don't have to read them yourself.

If you've an LOA for the 15th, you're nonetheless expected to hand in your journals - hand it in together with your upcoming HTI project on the 25th. It will still be marked but it shall not affect your overall - whether for better or worse. Those without an LOA will be considered non-submissions, and you know what that means.

Non-submissions lose out in 2 ways - you lose the full marks for this assessment, and you can't assess what it takes to do up an outstanding piece because there's nothing for you and I to gauge. In any case, lest you feel condemned - don't be...just make sure you hand in the rest of your assignments. Don't let me down. But most importantly, don't let yourself down.

The reference of this project is your Games Design & Development Studio assignment.

This project is to be conceived in the form of an illustrated report of about 500 words and should include images, sketches or photographs of your design project.

Use the following headings in your report:

Introduction - Describe your research processes dealing with movement, mechanics etc with your process diagrams, case studies, and other related images and photographs.
Translation - Discuss on how you translated your researches into a viable mechane.
The Machine-Experience - Critique the design and workings of your final proposal. (Substantiate why your proposal is 'interesting')
Reflections - Using references on HTI lectures and seminars (esp on Prometheus, Daedalus and Vitruvius), reflect upon the resonances of your mechanical innovation with that of ancient innovators or their theories (Hint: Overcoming nature, causing movement)

Design a cover page for the report, and ring bind for submission.

Place your report in an envelop and write

Origins of Time

-Introduction

In a way, Time does not exist. It has no form, no width, no length, and no breadth. It is the imaginings of the human brain to make sense of the sequence of events and therefore in a way, has been around for all eternality.

It is elusive and yet, it happens without people seeing or sensing it. It has been defined as a period or an interval where an event occur, and human beings have therefore created ways to measure time.

-Definition of Time

Time is a period of happenings – a series of occurring events.

“Time is relative” Albert Einstein

Example – Time flies by when you’re having fun. Time moves slowly when doing something boring/? A chore.

Measuring Time

As we live our lives in our busy world, telling time has become a great importance. Schedules need to be kept and datelines to meet. Time is a valuable asset of our modern era.Example – Making datelines, events, lunchtime, school assembly, bus arrival, performance

Maybe a businessman is meeting his client. The client would not like it if the businessman did not arrive on time. This would usually lead him to lose a potential client, which would in turn, result him in losing his job.

In other words, “Time is Money”

Suggestions: HTI Seminars

For those of you who have presented your seminar topics, this is for you still...there is another round.

Yes, in case you're wondering, there'll be a second round of seminar topics up for grabs next semester -- this is a year-long module, remember? Hooray!

Some suggestions for upcoming HTI presentations:

1) Slides: Less words

Your slides help your audience keep up with your presentation. If they lose track of what you're saying, reading the bulleted/short notes helps them stay engaged. If you speak mumbo-jumbo, and they have no idea what you're saying, scanning the points help them make sense of what's happening, ie what class they're in.

Excessively wordy slides turn your audience off. (Tip: Keep to 7 words max per point)

2) Speak Clearly

Don't mumble. If I've no idea what you're saying, you didn't say anything. Your friends would also be wondering if you're attempting a silent act. Oh yes, if you struggle with volume (and not articulation), please use the mike -- it's covered in your course fees.

Oh yes, please do not read us your slides. We can read for ourselves.

3) Quality Graphics

Please make sure the resolution's great...myopia is infectious.

4) Be Creative

May I suggest that you spare your pals the usual slides-and-talk show. (Notice I didn't end that clause with a '?')

Philosophy literally means love (philo) towards wisdom (sophia). Traditional philosophy struggled to find order in a world that was continually in flux. Philosophy, especially in both Plato and Aristotle, sought to seek wisdom from both the Cosmic and terrestrial realm for the betterment of humanity. Knowledge of humanity’s true order, will eventually reveal a startling potential, which is at core one of excellence. But reaching there constitutes a struggle, which requires thorough study on the order and hierarchies of existence.

Interestingly both philosophers gave space in their discourses on the power of the poetic work to reveal to man the order within which his life is conditioned. For example in our recent discussion on Aristotle’s Poetics, we learned of his claim that the poets are more philosophical than the historians. This is because the poets see structures and order underlying the phenomenon of life as opposed to the formal structures that interests the historian.

Presented for your meditation and philosophical commentary are two movies, Thank You for Smoking, and V for Vendetta. Consider as part of your reflections, what you think the core message(s) of the movies are, which profound moment(s) held the most meaning for you and why, and if the movies could be of relevance to you.

How does each title reveal primordial and deep-seated human emotions and conditions? How does each deal with the expression of ethics?

Help Understanding the X-Sheet

X-sheets are also known as dope sheets or exposure sheets. They are used by animators to record all necessary information relating to how the animation should be shot. A standard x-sheet consists of several columns that run from top to bottom, and 100 rows that run from left to right.

Each row represents 1 frame of animation. If the animation is to be played back at 25 frames per second, 100 frames will span 4 seconds of animation.

The dialogue column contains the sounds that are relevant to the animation. Often, it pertains to the dialogue spoken by the characters. In animation, the dialogue is recorded first. It is then ‘broken down’ – that is when the sound track is reviewed frame by frame. During this process, where each word starts and ends, and where the major vowel and consonant sounds are, are of vital importance. These are then marked on the x-sheet in the sound/dialogue column, frame by frame. It then becomes clear that at a certain frame, a particular sound is made.

The action column contains instructions on when a given piece of animation will start and end.
